By: Loki
I picked up Battlefield 2142 on Friday and got a decent amount of playing time in this past weekend. I did Conquest mode which is what we all know from BF2. There's a titan mode, which I think involves buidling a big dildo that gang rapes the other team, but I heard that somewhere. Anyway, here's my list of Pros and Cons.

1) CON: Fucking Battlefield
First and for most, it's still fucking battlefield. Write that down. People running for vehicles, spawn killing, artilery on uncappable bases, etc. Despite the server rules and some significant changes, a lot of the same BS still exists. It's a run and gun game, if that's what you want, that's what you get.

2) CON: What do you mean Loki_AoHPony is already taken?
Play profiles don't transfer from BF2 to 2142. Need to create a new name and hope it's not taken. I had trouble registering with the server for awhile and had to play under a different name until I got my Loki_AoH name backso there's 400 points and 4 hours down the tubes. Some players have the BF2 logo next to their name like it's somekind of "I'm not a douchebag" marker. I think they did that if you preorder 2142, or gave them money, free BJs, or all of the above. Doesn't do much except point out that most likely you are a douchebag.

3) PRO: Yay teamwork, sort of...
Squads play a larger role. You get points for working with your squad (you kill someone and are with your squad you get a squad bonus). So, to ranking up the quickest (if you don't have a vehicle) run around with your squad, it helps.

Spotting enemies also marks them on the screen with a red triangle rather than just a marker on the map, even if they are not visable. So, if a teammate spots an enemy and he runs around a building his marker still shows him behind the cover for a few seconds so you can track him. If he runs up stairs or just stops around the corner, you know. It makes spotting and actually helping your teammates a little more worthwhile.

4) CON: Can I unlock having a leg now?
The unlocks make no fucking sense. There are unlocks and field upgrades. You have to unlock things like a scope, grenades, the defib for medics, and yes I shit you not, the ability to run. Also, it seems the field unlocks allow you to get the things like mines and grenades but don't allow you to unlock guns. So if you use your rank upgrades to get those things, like I did, then you wasted them. I now have a few field unlocks that are sitting there that I can't use, but I still need a gun and sprint skills. The unlocks are tiered so in order to get a particular gun you have to unlock the 3 things beneath it, and there 3 different things for the next gun. Maybe I don't understand it or am doing something wrong, but it makes no fucking sense.
It's like the real military (not like I would really know) but you have to unlock things like helmets and grenades, maybe I can have my aunt send me a box of C4 for X-mas. Maybe I should ask for a parachute instead because I honestly don't think I have one, it never works and it's probably a 3rd tier unlock.

5) PRO: Fuck your Plane!
Not a lot of aircraft maps. Seems the majority of the maps don't have helicopters and I have yet to find a map with a plane. Good. A lot less crazy ownage. Infantry plays a bigger role, but there are maps that have that Euro forces oilfields feel to it: wide open and if you don't have a tank then you're fucked.

Also, as Nek said, a lot of the maps are very straight and narrow rather than wide open. You get big battles at the front lines and have to work for progress which makes teamwork a little more important.

6) PRO: Knifings
Now when you knife someone you collect their dogtags, which is like a ribbon/medal with the person's name on it. So, now you get that little extra momento when you totally rape a sniper. Makes the knife kill that much more special.

7) PRO: Better vehicle balance
The weapons on vehicles seem to be more balanced. Tanks only get shells, no machine gun if you are the driver. APC's get these 3 rocket barage if your sitting in the 2nd postion. Also the side guns on APCs are not completely useless like BF2. You get a full 180 deg field of view but it still doesn't hit shit. The Helicopters, which are the hover planes from Terminator 2, I shit you not they blatently stole them (or maybe licensed it) get rockets but it seems you get more but they do less damage. The TV guided is all fucked or so Boom tells me where you control it's flight with the mouse rather than clicking. Also, if the helicopters get hit with an EMP then they sort of stall or turn off, which makes you crash...a lot.

8 ) PRO: Death from Above
A nice little change is that a lot of the maps have scaffolding and monorails rather than having to run down the street of death. Gives everything a feel of depth and a little more realism. You can go roof top to roof top and have to be aware of what's in front of you and what's above. But you do get a lot of snipers, or Recon as they are called, and people lobbing grenades.

9) PRO: Bye Bye Verify
Load times are a lot better. There is no verifying client data, which is so nice. You load the map and then you are in.

10 ) CON: Futuristic for futuristic's sake
While a lot of the game seems believable there are some things that seem to be futuristic just for the hell of it. The hover tank sucks, but it hovers. Neat! You drive it and it fish tails around like a 16 year old Asain kid with a new suped up Honda. This gets annoying when you try to do things like, oh I don't know, Aim and drive. And what the fuck is the point of the pod launcher? As a squad leader you can drop a spawn beacon so members can spawn at locations without you being there but they drop in from orbit in pods. That's pretty cool but the decent blows. You sit there on decent watching the ground rush in for a few seconds and can't do shit. I guess it's like parachuting in BF2 but if you get really lucky your pod clips the side of a building on the way in and you die. Or as you land in a big cloud of dust you get lit up before the dust clears enough to even see. Cool. The walkers are cool but walk into a lot of shit, then can go over low obstacles, which equates to about the size of Cyto's booster seat, but you get seasick as they walk. I get some weird glitch where the thing shutters and shakes, even when I stop, which makes shoot from it very hard. Hovering, invisibility, Lasers, and laser noises because, well that's what happens in the future.

All in all, it's a fun game, it's better than BF2 but make no mistake it's still fucking battlefield. I foresee the same amount of rage and imagine the cheating and homoness will show itself in due time. But for big battles, mayhem, and a healthy dose of run and gun its pretty darn cool. It looks freaking pretty and the maps have a cool atmosphere, especially the snow maps, those are my favorite. The developers seemed to be heading in the right direction for improving the game, somethings have taken a step back, but overall they have made progress.
